The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

Embedding a Health Equity Lens: Lessons from Cook County, IL

By providing individuals experiencing homelessness with housing to improve health, community stakeholders in Illinois realized the value of embedding equity to maximize impact.

Using available Medicaid funding, community health stakeholders in Cook County, Ill., developed initiatives to bolster access to long-term housing to ultimately improve community health.  Groups added a focus on health equity to their initiatives, which informed how they partnered with their communities. Three key questions helped establish an explicit equity focus:

  • What is the historical and social landscape that is leading to inequitable outcomes?
  • How can you ensure those being served hold positions of power and are key decision makers?
  • What are the best ways to assess the outcomes of an equity-focused initiative?

The questions did not always have clear answers or resolutions, but they sparked important conversations and helped shape the initiative. Learn more and discover how to be more intentional about embedding equity into your organization’s work.
