The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

How Healthcare Providers Can Improve Equity in Maternal Healthcare

Healthcare providers can play a central role in improving maternal health equity, but where do they start? This checklist developed by experts led by the National Partnership for Women and Families offers specific actions for providers to improve maternity care.

While addressing disparities in maternal-newborn health is not the exclusive responsibility of healthcare provider organizations, they can play an outsized role. This checklist offers provider-specific recommendations to advance maternal health equity in clinical settings, including:

  • Assess current conditions, efforts, and activities. A review of available data and assessment of resources to support whole-person maternal and newborn care can lay the foundation for innovation and change.
  • Allocate necessary budget. Institutional readiness to serve diverse populations requires adequate resources.
  • Establish performance metrics. Performance measurements should assess both executive management and clinical staff.
  • Implement best practices. The implementation of new practices and policies should focus on mitigating the impact or racism and other structural inequities.
