The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

How to Advocate for Maternal Health Equity in Your Community

For organizations supporting equitable maternal healthcare, identifying specific policies to advocate for is a crucial first step. Also important is using an organization’s financial power and voice to shape communities.

This checklist, developed by experts led by the National Partnership for Women and Families, outlines specific actions that advocate for and improve the quality of maternal healthcare.

Specific recommendations include:

  • Advocate for care delivery and payment reform. Maternity care should be person-centered, available in patients’ homes, and affordable for all.
  • Support increased access to health insurance. All forms of health insurance, including Medicaid, should cover the full range of reproductive health services.
  • Advocate for improving social conditions. General policy initiatives such as food security, a livable minimum wage, and national paid family and medical leave all advance maternal health.
  • Use financial power to improve maternal health. Purchase goods and services from Black or women owned businesses, while leveraging endowment investments in support of anti-racism.
  • Shape public understanding of racism in maternal health equity. Inform and amplify messaging that supports anti-racism.
