The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

Improving Black Infant Mortality by Diversifying the Workforce

Black infants are more likely to die before their first birthday than other racial groups. Providers of color can help.

Black infant mortality is almost double that of White, Hispanic, and Asian babies. The Urban Institute cites growing evidence that diversifying the healthcare workforce can improve outcomes.

Strategies to increase diversity in the healthcare workforce include:

  • Developing pathways and support programs for underrepresented students
  • Working with K-12 students to encourage interest in healthcare careers
  • Increasing financial support for Black trainees and clinicians
  • Supporting contributions of health professionals of color
  • Combating discrimination against Black maternal health professionals
