Many health-based algorithms have used race and ethnicity to determine a patient’s treatment —contributing to the underdiagnoses of kidney disease, a limited approach to birthing options, and a lack of treatment options for historically marginalized populations.
As health systems move toward implementing new algorithms, they must:
- Increase diversity in clinical trial populations to understand outcomes and risk factors beyond race.
- Standardize data collection protocols to include the integration of social determinants of health.
- Train healthcare professionals and researchers about the complex social, economic, and environmental factors that shape health outcomes.
