The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

Redefining Patient Care: Building Trust and Equity in Healthcare

Black women with lived experience discuss their patient experiences, and navigate the differences between sympathetic, empathetic, and compassionate care.

The first step in improving healthcare for Black women and other people of color is changing the way health officials interact with their patients. Compassionate care enables healthcare workers to become partners with their patients and gain deeper insights into their patients’ health needs.

Tips on how to administer compassionate care:

  • Aim to be respectful and introduce all workers involved in the care.
  • Make eye contact with the patient.
  • Listen deeply, ask thoughtful questions, and wait for responses.
  • Try to repeat patient information to ensure accuracy.
  • Identify and prioritize resources needed to address social determinants of health.
