The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

Solutions for Improving Maternal Health Outcomes in America

The Urban Institute and Policies for Action hosted a discussion about achieving maternal health equity. Researchers, policymakers, advocates, and providers explored evidence, experience, and policy considerations for systemic change.

Achieving maternal health equity remains a challenge in the United States. Black, Hispanic, and American Indian and Alaska Native communities continue to experience poor maternal health outcomes. Contributing factors include systemic and social barriers, discrimination, bias, language differences, and location.

Evidence-based solutions can help close the equity gap and lead to better care for all. Suggested policy solutions to reduce maternal health disparities include:

  • Using community-based midwifery care models and reducing Medicaid reimbursement barriers
  • Increasing Medicaid and Indian Health Service funding to ensure continuous maternal healthcare access before, during, and after pregnancy
  • Improving language access infrastructure
  • Strengthening rural health care infrastructure
