The Intersection Where Anti-Racism and Healthcare Meet

Working Across Sectors to Advance Equity: Key Definitions and Considerations

Clearly defining equity and how it is measured is essential when different groups work together in a health-focused collaborative.

This brief provides a review of existing research to help multisector projects better define equity and identify approaches to measure it. Community measures like access to economic opportunity, housing, food, and other social determinants are vital indicators that are too often unaccounted for when defining and measuring equity.

Researchers pose questions to consider, including:

  • What historical practices within a given community are affecting equity?
  • What factors outside of healthcare affect equity and outcomes?
  • What social justice practices can help reach equity objectives?
  • To what extent do collaboratives involve community voices to address equity goals and needs?

Learn more about how defining equity and the indicators that measure it can improve processes and outcomes within health collaboratives.
